Burn Notice "Acceptable Loss" Review

The team helps Jesse's friend take down his smuggling boss; Michael needs Pearce's help.

When we last left our wonder spies, Anson had marginalized Sam by making him look like he had ties with the FSB after Sam, Michael, and Anson (only if he had access to Michael's head) helped out Sam's Colombian journalist friend (who was smoking hot!). While that fun was going on, Fiona and Jesse blackmailed a dirty banker in the Cayman's to get Anson's $200 million that was being tracked. Not too mention Michael and Anson had a great "heart to heart" with Anson, with the reveal that Michael's father's heart attack wasn't all that random. Ah, fun times.

More to come after this quick break for Milk Duds...

This week's Bad Guy of the Week was kind of a let down for me. The BGotW, Yash (Ravi Kapoor, Crossing Jordan), was an Indian diplomat who smuggles blood diamonds using his diplomatic immunity to keep him from getting caught. Enter Jesse's friend Ian (Gregg Henry, The Black Dahlia), a State department employee that basically plays babysitter for Yash but wants to bring him down before leaving government work. This arc didn't really do much for me. I know we should feel bad/proud that Ian was willing to sacrifice himself because he had terminal pancreatic cancer, but it felt pretty boring. The only real good stuff was a couple of great quotes from Jesse and Sam. And the pen needle!

The Good:

  • "That's perfect. Robbing a guy in broad daylight is a Fi kind of job." - Jesse to Sam
  • "Why do I always have the feeling that's the last thing I'm ever gonna hear?" - Sam to Fi saying she has a plan.
  • Robbing Yash's buyer and stealing his Ferrari too. Fi always makes things fun.
  • PEN NEEDLE!!

The Bad:
  • Ravi Kapoor as a bad guy. Just didn't do anything for me.
  • Ian sacrificing himself.
  • Stealing a shady jewelry store with $20,000. Kind of steep.
  • The whole story in general. Just felt boring.

The "Burn" arc wasn't all that huge, but it had a couple of revealing bits. One, we got Vaughn (Robert Wisdom) back for a little "pow wow" with Michael, sporting the always flattering orange jumpsuit and bitching about cheap scotch. For a while there it looked like Vaughn was going to get his immunity for telling Michael what all the account numbers he and Fi stole were and Anson was using them. Of course, Michael plays Vaughn for a fool, threatening to bring all the operatives he's narced on to be his cell mates. The revelation that Anson is rebuilding the organization wasn't only not surprising, but expected. This part of the arc was nothing much more than a set up for what looks like should be an exciting finale.

The Good:

  • Michael blackmailing Vaughn to get the information, then following through with his threat anyway. You don't mess with a pissed off Michael Westen.
  • The whole Vaughn and Michael sequence. Wisdom always plays Vaughn so well.
  • Michael having to do paperwork. Maybe it's better to stay in the private sector.
The Bad:
  • It was only set up for next week's finale. Otherwise, it was good.
So what did everyone else think?
